Find how many units you need to sell to cover your costs. Enter your fixed costs, price per unit and variable cost per unit to get the break-even point in units and revenue.

Formula

  • Contribution margin = Price − Variable cost
  • Break-even units = Fixed costs ÷ Contribution margin
  • Break-even revenue = Break-even units × Price

Example

With $10,000 fixed costs, a $50 price and $30 variable cost, contribution margin is $20 and you break even at 500 units ($25,000 revenue).

Frequently asked questions

What if the contribution margin is zero or negative?

Then each sale loses money or only covers its own variable cost, so you can never break even at that price. Raise the price or cut variable costs.
