Formula
Contribution margin = Price − Variable costBreak-even units = Fixed costs ÷ Contribution marginBreak-even revenue = Break-even units × Price
Example
With $10,000 fixed costs, a $50 price and $30 variable cost, contribution margin is $20 and you break even at 500 units ($25,000 revenue).
Frequently asked questions
What if the contribution margin is zero or negative?
Then each sale loses money or only covers its own variable cost, so you can never break even at that price. Raise the price or cut variable costs.
