Find your profit, profit margin and markup from a cost and a selling price. Margin shows profit as a share of revenue; markup shows it as a share of cost — the two are often confused, and this tool shows both.

Formula

  • Profit = Revenue − Cost
  • Margin % = (Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
  • Markup % = (Profit ÷ Cost) × 100

Example

A product costs $60 and sells for $100. Profit is $40, margin is 40% (40 ÷ 100) and markup is 66.7% (40 ÷ 60).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit divided by the selling price; markup is profit divided by the cost. A 50% markup is only a 33% margin, so mixing them up overstates profitability.

Is this gross or net margin?

It calculates gross margin from a single cost and revenue. Net margin would also subtract operating expenses, tax and other overheads.
